Demanding Virginia Come Clean In Brandon Raub Case
Washington, DC—Today, Revolution PAC submitted Freedom of Information Act requests to numerous Virginia agencies demanding the Commonwealth and her local jurisdictions come clean over the conspiracy they engaged in with federal law-enforcement and national-security agencies and personnel in the Brandon J. Raub case. On August 16, 2012, Mr. Raub, a decorated Marine who served with distinction in Iraq and Afghanistan, was unceremoniously kidnapped by a joint Federal-Virginia strike force after being interrogated at his home without a lawyer present, not read his Mirandia rights, handcuffed, detained and committed to two psychiatric wards in Virginia for Facebook postings he made critical of the government. Mr. Raub was never charged with a violation of the law.
“We do not intend to allow the Commonwealth of Virginia to sweep these deplorable acts under the rug by claiming ‘sovereign immunity,’” or playing the security card,” said Revolution PAC chairman Lawrence A. Hunter. “Virginia and federal officials criminally conspired to kidnap and “disappear” Mr. Raub into the Virginia psychiatric gulag, and they must be held to account just like anyone else committing these kinds of criminal acts. All Americans deserve to know exactly how this atrocity was planned, coordinated and carried out under the color of law. That is why it is incumbent on all Virginia agencies to come forth with all the information they have to shine the full light of day on this horrible violation of Mr. Raub’s constitutional rights. And, that is why Revolution PAC is demanding that Virginia Attorney General Kenneth Cuccinelli prosecute the perpetrators of these criminal acts without shielding them behind claims of “sovereign immunity,” a concept contrary to the American concept of liberty where sovereignty resides in each and every individual, not the state.”
Hunter said it appears that government “disappearings” of people critical of the government, especially veterans, are not uncommon. Brandon Raub’s attorney, John Whitehead of the Rutherford Institute concurs:
“Brandon Raub’s case exposed the seedy underbelly of a governmental system that seems to be targeting Americans—especially military veterans—for expressing their discontent over America’s rapid transition to a police state,” Whitehead says. “As we are learning, Brandon Raub is not the first veteran to be targeted for speaking out against the government, detained against his will—despite having threatened no one—and isolated from his family, friends and attorneys. Hopefully, by holding officials accountable, we can ensure that Brandon is the last to suffer in this way.”
Hunter concluded that, “The only way to hold officials accountable is to hold them to the same standard of justice to which everyone else is held. No special treatment, no so-called “sovereign immunity” for government officials. In America, all people are created equal under the law, including government officials, and everyone must be held to the same standard of justice. That means, the local, state and federal officials involved in the Raub kidnapping and “disappearing” must be prosecuted under the same criminal statutes anyone else would be for engaging in similar or identical acts.”
